First Inning Blunders Cost Sox in 6-0 Loss

Posted May 7, 2003

(SN Report #483) - Mark Buehrle threw a solid game and D'Angelo Jimenez has been one of the more productive player so far, but in the first inning of Tuesday night's 6-0 loss to the A's, it didn't look it.

After giving up a lead off single to Mark Ellis, Buehrle walked Miguel Tejada and Erubial Durazo to load the bases with two outs.

Then, in what appeared to be the final out, Ramon Hernandez hit a pop up to second base, which is when Jimenez made a three-run mistake, dropping the ball. Buehrle ended the inning two batters later, striking out Terrance Long.

The three runs were three runs too much with Mark Mulder on the mound for the opposing Oakland A's. Mulder, for his thrid straight start -- the last two coming against the White Sox -- threw a complete game. In the 27-inning span, he has given up just one run.

The A's added a fourth run with an Adam Piatt sacrifice fly in the fourth, and brought the lead to 6-0 with a two-run homer by Duraza in the eighth. Scoring on the homer was Tejada, who reached on a throwing error by Jose Valentin.

Buehrle was charged for just two of the six runs, throwing 7 1/3 innings, striking two and walking two on 107 pitches. Tom Gordon relieved Buehrle after Durazo's homer, giving up no runs in 2/3 of an inning.

The Sox had five hits and seven total baserunners in the game, but grounded into three double plays, giving them 31 on the season.

Jimenez and Valentin each went 1-4 at the top of the order, while Magglio Ordonez, Joe Crede and Sandy Alomar each went 1-3. Willie Harris went 0-3 out of the nine-spot. Harris is now 1-13 since being called up last Thursday.

The loss drops the Sox record to 15-17 and extends their losing streak to four games. Game two of the three-game set will be Wednesday at 9:05 p.m. CT. Esteban Loaiza -- moving a day up with Jon Garland being held back to Thursday -- will take the mound against lefty Ted Lilly. The game will be televised on Fox Sports Net Chicago.
