Runs Come Late, Garland Off Early

Posted May 8, 2003

A day after the White Sox scored eight runs, the most since April 19 against the Indians, the offense took awhile to get going on Thursday afternoon, losing to the A's and Miguel Tejada, 8-5.

The Sox scored three runs in the final two innings to cut what was an 8-2 defecit to 8-5. Jon Garland had another rough start, giving up five runs on eight hits in five innings, striking out two.

A two-run homer by Magglio Ordonez in the third put the Sox on top 2-0. The lead was cut in half with a Scott Hatteberg RBI-single in the A's half of the third and tied up in the fourth with a Ramon Hernandez RBI-double.

That was all the Sox had in the lead department, as a three-run homer by Tejada put the Sox down 5-2. Scoring on the play was Hatteberg and Eric Chavez, who reached on a walk and single respectively.

Garland finished the inning, but was pulled to start the sixth in favor of Rick White. White threw a scoreless sixth before giving up three runs in the seventh. Chavez homered for the first run, and following Tejada reaching on an error by Joe Crede at third, Erubial Durazo doubled to put the A's up 7-2. Two batters later, Dave Sanders relieved White and gave up a Terrance Long RBI-double.

A's starter John Halama threw 6 1/3 innings, giving up two runs and striking out four. Jim Mecir, who relieved Halama in the seventh, pitched into the eighth, getting pulled with two men on and two outs for Jeremy Fikac.

With Crede and Carlos Lee on first and second -- reaching on singles -- Miguel Olivo was hit by a pitch and D'Angelo Jimenez and Brian Daubach both walked, scoring Crede and Lee. The second walk was off Keith Foulke. Frank Thomas homered in the ninth for the final Sox' run. Billy Koch threw a scoreless inning of relief.

The Sox will now head to Seattle and begin a three-game set with the Mariners on Friday at 9:05 p.m. CT. Danny Wright is scheduled to make his season debut against Ryan Franklin. The game will be televised on WGN.
