Crede Error, Sluggish Offense Proves Costly

Posted May 23, 2003

(SN Report #502) - Jon Garland's solid six-inning, two-run outing went for nothing as the offense managed just two runs and the defense broke down in the eighth, leading to a 3-2 loss to Detroit on Friday night. The Tigers' Mike Maroth, who entered the game winless on the season at 0-9, picked up the win.

The game was tied 2-2 in the eighth inning when a one out grounder to third by Ramon Santiago resulted in a throwing error by Joe Crede. Santiago reached second on the error.

Two batters later -- after Kelly Wunsch relieved Tom Gordon, getting Bobby Higginson to groundout -- Dmitri Young hit a double to left over the head of Carlos Lee, who misjudged it off the bat. Santiago scored, giving the Tigers a 3-2 lead. The White Sox are now 3-18 when they make an error.

The Sox had a 2-1 lead after five innings, scoring on a Magglio Ordonez RBI-double in the first and Crede's third homer of the season in the fifth. In the sixth inning, Higginson doubled, advanced to third on a sacrifice fly to center and scored on a Carlos Pena sacrifice fly, tying the game. Detroit scored their first run with an Eugene Kingsale RBI-single in the fifth.

Chris Spurling relieved Maroth after seven innings, earning his second save of the season.

Gordon threw 1 2/3 scoreless innings (1 unearned run), Wunsch threw 2/3 of an inning and Gary Glover threw a scoreless ninth inning.

Garland walked three and struck out two on 85 pitches. He lowered his ERA to 5.70.

Joe Borchard -- called up before the game after Willie Harris was placed on the 15-day disabled list -- made his season debut with the Sox, going 0-3 with two strikeouts.

Lee, Paul Konerko and Jose Valentin each went 0-4, while Frank Thomas went 0-3 with two strikeouts. Miguel Olivo went 1-3 with a single and threw out a base-stealer. The Sox grounded into three double plays in the game and now have a league-leading 46 on the season.

Game two of the series will be on Saturday at 6:05 p.m. CT and will be televised on Fox Sports Net Chicago. Esteban Loaiza is scheduled to start against Gary Knotts.
