Behind Colon, Sox Surge to 4-0 Win

Posted Jun 8, 2003

(SN Report #519) - A ninth inning RBI sacrifice fly ended Bartolo Colon's chance at a complete game shutout, but it couldn't keep him away from earning his fifth complete game of the season and sixth win as the White Sox topped the Dodgers, 4-1.

Colon had plenty left in the tank, throwing just 87 pitches (less than 10 pitches per inning), striking out five, walking none and allowing four hits.

Offensively the Sox were led by Frank Thomas, 3-3 with a homer, and Joe Crede, 3-4 with a homer. Thomas now has a 10-game hitting streak, where he has gone 16-37 with 10 RBIs and six doubles.

Thomas' and Crede's solo home run's came in the seventh and eighth innings in order, both off former Sox pitcher Wilson Alvarez.

The Sox, who had 10 hits and left eight men on base, scored their first two runs in the third inning.

The inning started on a Miguel Olivo walk. After Olivo advanced to second on a Colon bunt, D'Angelo Jimenez singled to right field, scoring Olivo for the 1-0 lead.

Jimenez then stole second, reached third on a Jose Valentin fly out and scored, after a Thomas walk, on a Magglio Ordonez single. Thomas and Ordonez moved up on a wild pitch, putting both in scoring position, but Carlos Lee struck out to end it.

Lee went 0-4 and is now 3-20 in his last six games, while Ordonez went 2-4. Jimenez went 1-5, as did Valentin. Armando Rios started in center, going 0-3.

The first two runs were scored off starter Andy Ashby, who pitched three innings before giving way for Alvarez. Alvarez gave up two runs in five innings, striking out five.

The rubber-match off the set will be played on Sunday at 3:10 p.m. CT and will be televised on Fox Sports Net Chicago. Esteban Loaiza is scheduled to pitch against lefty Odalis Perez.
