White came in with a man on and one out in the sixth, after starter Danny Wright gave up two runs. Wright pitched 5 1/3 innings, giving up four runs on six hits and three walks. He struck out four and threw 83 pitches.
The Sox jumped in front to a 1-0 lead in the second with a homer by Magglio Ordonez, his 12th of the season. And with the game tied at 1-1, Carlos Lee put the Sox up 4-1 with a three-run homer, scoring Thomas and Ordonez, who were hit by a pitch and walked in order.
San Diego cut the lead to 4-2 with a RBI-double in the fifth and tied the game with two runs in the sixth.
Although Thomas' eighth inning homer put the Sox in front, the lead was a hit shy of changing sides in the ninth as the Padres loaded the bases with two outs on two walks and an error by second baseman D'Angelo Jimenez. Billy Koch pitched himself out of the jam, earning his eighth save.
The Sox will play the final game of the set on Sunday at 1:05 p.m. CT, with Jon Garland going up against Oliver Perez. The game will be televised Fox Sports Net Chicago.
