Thomas Carries Sox with Game-Winning Homer

Posted Jun 15, 2003

(SN Report #526) - Frank Thomas received what he hasn't received in quite some time on Saturday night - a standing ovation. The ovation came after Thomas, with the White Sox down 5-4 in the eighth, belted an eventual game-winning, two-run homer as the Sox beat San Diego, 6-5.

It all happened an inning after the Padres broke the 4-4 tie in the top of the eighth, with a RBI-sacrifice fly. Scoring was Mark Loretta, who led off the inning with a single off Rick White. Damaso Marte recorded the first out before giving up a double, and Tom Gordon ended the inning.

White came in with a man on and one out in the sixth, after starter Danny Wright gave up two runs. Wright pitched 5 1/3 innings, giving up four runs on six hits and three walks. He struck out four and threw 83 pitches.

The Sox jumped in front to a 1-0 lead in the second with a homer by Magglio Ordonez, his 12th of the season. And with the game tied at 1-1, Carlos Lee put the Sox up 4-1 with a three-run homer, scoring Thomas and Ordonez, who were hit by a pitch and walked in order.

San Diego cut the lead to 4-2 with a RBI-double in the fifth and tied the game with two runs in the sixth.

Although Thomas' eighth inning homer put the Sox in front, the lead was a hit shy of changing sides in the ninth as the Padres loaded the bases with two outs on two walks and an error by second baseman D'Angelo Jimenez. Billy Koch pitched himself out of the jam, earning his eighth save.

The Sox will play the final game of the set on Sunday at 1:05 p.m. CT, with Jon Garland going up against Oliver Perez. The game will be televised Fox Sports Net Chicago.
