Sox, Garland Rip Cubs, 12-3

(SN Report #534) - The White Sox made very little of the opening game of the always important crosstown series with the Cubs, scoring six runs in the first inning and 12 for the game, helping starter Jon Garland beat Shawn Estes, 12-3.

The six-run first happened largely in part to Estes' control problems, four walks, and was capped off by a Miguel Olivo grand slam. Magglio Ordonez singled in the first run, while Aaron Rowand drove in one of his three RBIs with a bases-loaded walk.

Estes didn't make it to the second inning, but Garland, who gave up a homer to Alex Gonzalez in the first, did. Garland went on to pitch six innings, giving up two runs, and earn his fifth win of the season.

The Sox added two runs, one earned, in the second inning off reliever Todd Wellemeyer, with a single by Carlos Lee. The ball went by centerfielder Corey Patterson for a two-base error, scoring Magglio Ordonez from first.

Four more runs in the fourth extended the lead to 12-1. It started with a walk to Frank Thomas, one of two walks for him in the game, and double by Ordonez. Lee then hit a soft-single to score Thomas and put men on the corners. A RBI-single by Joe Crede and two-run double by Rowand ended the scoring for the Sox in the game.

The Cubs scored one more run off Garland with a Troy O'Leary double in the sixth, and the third run off lefty Dave Sanders, who threw 1 2/3 innings. Rick White finished the game with 1 1/3 scoreless innings.

Rowand went 3-4 with three RBIs, while Lee went 2-5 with two RBIs. Ordonez went 2-4 with a RBI. Jose Valentin, Thomas, Crede and Olivo each had one hit.

The second game of the series will be played on Saturday at 12:15 p.m. CT, with Mark Buehrle going up against Matt Clement. Recommended Stories
