Paul Opts for Free Agency

Posted Jun 26, 2003

(SN Report #540) - Josh Paul's up and down stay with his favorite team appears to have ended as the AAA/backup catcher has decided to test the free agent market rather than head back to Charlotte.

The 28-year-old Paul was designated for assignment on Monday as Sandy Alomar Jr. returned from the disabled list. Paul has now cleared waivers and has chosen to reject the assignment.

Paul, who made the 25-man roster out of spring training only to get demoted just a few weeks after, was called up when Alomar was placed on the 15-day disabled list with a strained right oblique muscle on May 31.

Paul has seen many trips between Charlotte and the White Sox since 1999, but little playing time, getting the most in 2001 (57 games).

The Buffalo Grove native has a .264 career average with 42 RBIs and four homers over the course of 145 games.

In 13 games this season with the White Sox, Paul batted .353 with six runs scored and four RBIs.
