In Thick of Trades, Sox Continue to Roll

Condensed Recap
Posted Jul 2, 2003

(SN Report #549) - The news of the day -- and night -- was the acquisitions of both Roberto Alomar and Carl Everett, but more important was the 6-1 win the White Sox, led by Mark Buehrle, had over the Twins, cutting the deficit in the AL Central race.

With the win the Sox are now just one game under .500 at 41-42 and three games behind the Kansas City Royals for first place in the division.

Mark Buehrle was just an inning shy of his second straight complete game, throwing eight innings, allowing one run, which was an ninth-inning homer by Matt Lecroy, chasing Buehrle from the game. Buehrle struck out five and walked none.

Like many starts of late, the White Sox gave Buehrle plenty of run support, scoring five runs off Twins' starter Brade Radke and six total.

The Sox hit three homers in the game: two solo shots by Brian Daubach and Sandy Alomar Jr., and a two-run homer by Frank Thomas.

Frank Thomas went 2-4 with three RBIs and Joe Crede went 1-4 with a RBI, while Willie Harris, Aaron Rowand and Magglio Ordonez also had a hit each. Daubach went 2-4 and Harris stole his fifth base. Tom Gordon threw a scoreless ninth to end it.

The final game of the set will be played on Wednesday at 6:05 p.m. CT, with Dan Wright going up against Kyle Lohse, who will be facing a Sox lineup consisting of both of the newest additions - Alomar and Everett. The game will be televised on Fox Sports Net Chicago.
