Clutch-less Sox Can't Finish Comeback Bid

Condensed Recap
Posted Jul 6, 2003

(SN Report #556) - Thanks to the White Sox offense leaving 12 men on base, for the first time this season the Tampa Bay Devil Rays have won three straight games, beating the Sox, 3-2, and preventing Esteban Loaiza from picking up his 12th win.

Loaiza gave up three runs in seven innings, striking out five and walked four, falling to 11-4 on the season, while Devil Rays' starter Jorge Sosa pitched 5 1/3 scoreless innings.

Tampa Bay scored their runs in the fifth and seventh innings on a Javier Valentin homer and then on a RBI-single by Julio Lugo and RBI-sacrifice fly by Rocco Baldelli.

Down 3-0, the White Sox scored two runs in the ninth on a Magglio Ordonez pinch-hit home run and Frank Thomas' RBI-double, scoring Roberto Alomar, who doubled. With the tying run on second and one out, the Sox failed to bring the run in.

The Sox will hope to salvage the series and prevent a sweep on Sunday afternoon at 12:15 CT, with Mark Buehrle going up against Jason Standridge.
