Thomas Falls Short in Vote

Posted Jul 9, 2003

(SN Report #560) - Frank Thomas' third and fourth shots at making the all-star team came up short again as he finished second in the etopps 32nd man vote, getting topped by Boston catcher Jason Varitek, and then was overlooked as the replacement for the injured Mike Sweeney. Instead the Yankees Jason Giambi was picked.

In 82 games, Thomas is batting .279 with 20 homers, 48 RBIs, a .418 on base percentage and 61 walks.

With this, the only representives for the White Sox on the all-star team is Esteban Loaiza and Carl Everett. Loaiza was battling Toronto's Roy Halladay and Seattle's Jamie Moyer for the starting spot, but Halladay, at the request of Blue Jays' manager Carlos Tosca, will not be pitching at all.
