Sox, Colon Fall to Tigers, 4-2

Posted Jul 10, 2003

(SN Report #561) - The season of the White Sox is back in reverse. After a promising three week stretch of baseball, the Sox have now lost back-to-back series' against the Devil Rays and Tigers, who have the two worst records in baseball. The Sox lost Wednesday night, 4-2.

Bartolo Colon was on the mound for the White Sox, and like many of his starts over the past month, he found himself throwing a lot of pitches and getting into jams he couldn't get out of. Colon pitched six innings, giving up four runs on 11 hits and one walk. He struck out four and threw 101 pitches.

The Sox' only lead in the game came in the first inning on a Carlos Lee one-out solo homer. After a Frank Thomas' fly out, they loaded the bases with on an error, single and walk, but Joe Crede popped out to end it.

The lead was short-lived as the Tigers, on four singles, took a 2-1 lead. A fifth-inning RBI-single and sixth-inning RBI-double put them ahead 4-1.

Over the next five innings, the Sox had just two baserunners, both off errors. Jose Valentin doubled in the seventh, scoring Crede, who was hit by a pitch. That was the last hit the Sox would get as Tigers' starter Jeremy Bonderman, who entered the game 2-13, threw 6 1/3 innings, while the bullpen duo of Jamie Walker and Chris Mears ended it.

Damaso Marte threw two scoreless innings of relief, striking out three.

Once again, the Sox will try to avoid a sweep and win game three of the series, which will be on Thursday afternoon at 12:05 CT. Esteban Loaiza is scheduled to pitch against Nate Cornejo.
