Loaiza Gem Put to Waste

Posted Jul 10, 2003

(SN Report #562) - What do Victor Zambrano, Jorge Sosa, Wil Ledezma, Jeremy Bonderman and Nate Cornejo have in common? They are all young, and in most cases, unknown starting pitchers who have had arguably their best game of their career against the White Sox. The latest being Cornejo in Thursday's 1-0 win over Esteban Loaiza and the Sox.

The White Sox are now just 6-6 against the Tigers this season and 21-19 against teams that are currently below .500. It was the first sweep the Tigers had at home of the season and the first time they swept the Sox at home since 1984.

The White Sox did manage to make things interesting in the ninth, down 1-0, putting men at the corners with one out. But it all ended as a hard-hit liner by Brian Daubach, one that appeared to be an easy double, was caught by the diving Carlos Pena, who, while on the ground, doubled up Magglio Ordonez at first.

The inning started with a walk to Frank Thomas, finally chasing Cornejo out of the game, and after pinch-running Thomas with Aaron Rowand, a single by Ordonez. Rowand reached third when centerfielder Alex Sanchez bobbled the ball.

Loaiza, who struck out seven and walked none in eight innings, gave up his only run in the first inning on a RBI-single by Kevin Witt. Loaiza is now 11-5 with a 2.21 ERA.

Of the eight hits for the Sox, three came from Ordonez, with two each coming from Jose Valentin and Miguel Olivo. The hits for Olivo broke an 0-22 slump for him.

Now, four games under .500, the Sox will head to Cleveland to start a four-game series against the Indians on Friday at 6:05 p.m. CT, with Dan Wright going up against lefty Brian Anderson. The game will be televised on Fox Sports Net Chicago. Saturday will be a double-header.
