Sox Flawless in Pounding of Tigers

Posted Jul 20, 2003

(SN Report #575) - It was only 10 days ago (July 10) that the White Sox had 370 runs, ranking them 28th in the majors. Now, after eight games and 55 runs, giving them 425 on the season, they are 22nd. The latest outburst came on Sunday as they beat the Tigers 10-1. Esteban Loaiza picked up the win.

The runs were scattered through the first five innings off Tigers' starter Wilfredo Ledezma and their bullpen. The White Sox hit five homers in the game, two coming from Frank Thomas.

Loaiza, who is now 12-5 with a 2.16 ERA, gave up one run in seven innings. Loaiza struck out seven and walked one, throwing 93 pitches. Gary Glover and Billy Koch each threw a scoreless inning in relief.

It all started with a leadoff triple by Saturday's hero Tony Graffanino, a RBI-sacrifice fly by Aaron Rowand and solo homer by Thomas, giving the Sox the 2-0 lead. For Graffanino, it was one of two triples and three hits in the game.

The White Sox went up 4-0 in the third with Thomas' second homer and single by Paul Konerko, scoring, Magglio Ordonez, who doubled.

Three more runs in both the fourth and sixth innings put them up 10-1. The Tigers lone run came on a Eric Munson fifth-inning homer.

Along Thomas, Ordonez, Konerko and Jose Valentin also homered. With his 3-4 day, Konerko is batting .213 on the season. Ordonez, 3-3, is at .298.

The Sox will start a two-game set against the Indians at home on Monday at 7:05 p.m. CT, with lefties Mike Porzio and Terry Mulholland going head-to-head. The game will be televised on WCIU.
