MadFriars' Daily Farm Report: August 29

Burch Smith

Burch Smith strikes out 10 for the first time in AAA but Layne and Quackenbush blow the lead in the 9th.

Reno Aces 2 – Tucson Padres 1

Key Statistics RHP Burch Smith 7 IP, 3 H, 0 ER, 0 BB, 10 K; LF Jonathan Galvez 1-3, RS, BB.

Prospect Watch: Not a bad way to make a final start before rosters expand on September 1st. Smith was lights out, throwing 98 pitches, 69 for strikes, in seven innings. It was only his second time in 12 AAA starts that Smith did not walk a batter. Over his last three starts Smith has gone 17 IP, 10 H, 4 ER, 4 BB, 24 K.

San Antonio Missions 9 – Midland Rockhounds 10

Key Statistics 2B Cory Spangenberg 2-5, 2 RS; PH Tommy Medica 1-1, 2B, RS, 2 RBI; SS Jeudy Valdez 2-5, HR (10), RBI.

Prospect Watch: With Matt Clark and Nate Frieman gone, the only big time power threat the Padres have in their full season minor leagues teams is Tommy Medica. Medica's .541 SLG is top 10 in the Texas League and if it wasn't for the fact that he missed nearly two months with injury could easily be over 20 home runs (currently at 15) and close to 80+ RBI.

For further reading on the San Antonio Missions please see the San Antonio Express-News.

Lake Elsinore 11 – Lancaster Jethawks 9

Key Statistics LHP Frank Garces 3 IP, 7 H, 7 ER, 4 BB, 1 K; CF Kyle Gaedale 4-5, 3 RS, 2 HR (13), 3 RBI; DH Jeremy Baltz 3-4, 2B, HR (8), 3 RBI.

Prospect Watch: It hasn't been an easy year for Kyle Gaedale. The left fielder has been moved to center after the injury to Travis Jankowski. The Storm were looking at Gaedale to give the team a power boost that they knew they were not going to be able to get from other players. Unfortunately he struggled out of the gate and while his .750 overall OPS is not bad, it is nowhere near what the Padres were hoping for either.

For further reading on the Storm please see the Southwest Riverside News Network.

Fort Wayne TinCaps 0 – Western Michigan WhiteCaps 2

Key Statistics RHP Bryan Rodriguez 6 IP, 7 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 4 BB, 5 K; C Rodney Daal 1-3.

Prospect Watch: The TinCaps had three hits, all singles and went 0-5 with runners in scoring position negating a good outing by Bryan Rodriguez.

For further reading on the TinCaps' please see the Fort Wayne Journal-Gazette.

Eugene Ems 2 – Hilsboro Hops 9

Key Statistics RHP Bryan Verbitsky 2.1 IP, 2 H, 3 ER, 4 BB, 3 K; RF Donavan Tate 1-2, 2B, RS, BB; 3B Fernando Perez 1-4, 3B, RS, RBI.

Prospect Watch: The Emeralds have four games left and while Donavan Tate obviously hasn't had the type of performances most Padres' fans would like to see there is a good chance he is going to end up with an on-base percentage north of .350 - which is a good number. How much Donavan can progress this winter and in spring training will pretty much determine if his baseball career will continue.

The talent still seems to be there, let's hope he can do it.

For further reading on the Emeralds, see the Eugene Register-Guard.
