The DSL playoffs highlight the report as the Cubs go for the series win on Saturday.
Dominican Summer League—Cubs 9, Tigers 3
The Cubs had 12 hits and drew nine walks to even the series with the Tigers and the two teams will square off Saturday for a trip to the DSL finals on the line.
At the Plate: 2B Bryant Flete, who played a full season in the VSL, led the hit parade with a pair doubles and two runs. C Antonio Valerio and RF Shamil Ubiera both had two hits and finished with 2 RBI apiece. 1B Roney Alcala, another VSL product, scored three times going 1-3 with a RBI. SS Varonex Cuevas blasted a solo homer and singled while LF Robert Garcia was 1-3 with a RBI. Cubs took a 2-0 lead in 4th on RBI doubles by Valerio and Ubiera, and added four more in the fifth as Cuevas led off the innings with a solo homer. The Cubs added an unearned run in the sixth when Flete doubled and scored on a throwing error. A RBI groundout by Alcala and another throwing error plated the final two runs in the 8th.
On the Mound: Jose Paulino (5-3, 2.33 ERA, 58 IP, 71 K) got the start in Game 2 and the 18-year-old went four innings before a rain delay ended his day. The lefty allowed one unearned run on three hits and a walk with four punchouts.....Frailin Figueroa (5-1 1.27 ERA, 49.2 IP, 53K) surrendered two runs in the sixth as the 18-year-old left-hander had trouble locating the strike zone, walking three while allowing one hit. Both runs scored when Yomar Morel (1-1 1.63 ERA, 27.2IP, 26K) came into the game with the base loaded and after getting the second out of the inning, surrendered a two-run single. Morel went the final three innings earning the save and finished with a line of 3.2 IP, 2H 0R, 1BB, 2K.
Sheldon McDonald was promoted to Daytona from Kane County. Its McDonald’s second trip to the D-Cubs......Kane County coach Kenny Socorro was activated and placed on the roster. Socorro took the mound in Cedar Rapids. Game report below.
AAA—Nashville 3, Iowa 2
Iowa’s (65-76) playoff hopes ended Friday night as Nashville (55-86) scored two runs in the bottom of the sixth to beat the I-Cubs.
At the Plate: Brad Nelson (.272) was the offense with a RBI single in the third and smacked his 20th homer of the season, a solo shot, in the sixth. Mike Olt was 3-4 to raise his average to .202. Julio Borbon (.254) doubled and scored on Nelson’s single.
On the Mound: Brooks Raley (8-10 4.46) ERA) added another strong performance to his 2013 resume allowing a hit and a run in five innings. The left-hander waked two and fanned three, throwing 63 pitches....Marcus Hatley (2-2 4.43) couldn’t hold the lead allowing two runs on three straight hits in the sixth. Chang-Yong Lim (0-0 0.87) fanned two in a scoreless inning and Zach Rosscup (0-1 0.00) followed with another shutout frame with a walk and a strikeout. Rosscup has 15 K in 6.2 IP in AAA.
AA—Tennessee 12, Chattanooga 1
Justin Bour knocked in six runs and Eduardo Figueroa tossed six innings of one-hit ball as Tennessee (74-61) beat Chattanooga (58-78).
At the Plate: Justin Bour (.243) went 3-5 with a homer (18) and a double driving in a season-high six runs. Christian Villanueva (.261) ripped his 41st double of the year, one of two hits, and knocked in two giving him 70 on the season. Arismendy Alcantara (.270) had 2 RBI going 1-4 with 2 BB while Brett Jackson (.200) doubled, tripled and scored twice. Matt Szczur (.279) scored three runs getting on base four times with two singles and two walks. Javier Baez (.293) was 1-4 with a walk and three strikeouts.
On the Mound: Eduardo Figueroa (2-2 2.38 ERA) had his best performance of the season limiting the Lookouts to one hit in six innings. He walked one and fanned five in his 86-pitch gem....Armando Rivero (0-1 2.16) fanned two in 2.1 frames but allowed four hits and a run....Tony Zych (5-5 3.11) got the final two outs, one on strikes.
Smokies Notes: SS Javier Baez, 2B Arismendy Alcantara, 3B Christian Villanueva, OF Matt Szczur and P Kyle Hendricks were all named to the Southern League Postseason All-Star team.
High A—Daytona 11, Brevard County 6
Daytona (74-50) won their 10th straight game blasting five homers in the win over Brevard County (65-57).
At the Plate: Dustin Geiger (17), Kris Bryant (5), Zeke DeVoss (6), Bijan Rademacher (2) and Pin-Chieh Chen (2) all hit solo shots in the win as the D-Cubs had 12 hits. Rademacher (.275) was 3-4 with a run and 2 RBI while Geiger (.281), DeVoss (.248), and Chen (.282) all finished with two hits. Benjamin Carhart (.249) doubled and scored twice.
On the Mound: Austin Reed (3-2 4.13 ERA) got the win in relief throwing two no-hit innings as the Manatees had a hard time making solid contact with the right-hander’s 96 mph fastball....Ivan Pineyro (3-1 3.40) made the start allowing four earned runs on five hits, including a two-run homer, in five innings. Pineyro walked two and fanned five.....Sheldon McDonald (0-1 3.81) joined the team from Kane County, pitching two innings. The left-hander allowed two runs on two hits and a walk.
Low A—Cedar Rapids 8, Kane County 2
Cedar Rapids (80-49) blasted three homers to down Kane County (53-79) in the Cougars final road game of the season.
At the Plate: Kane County took a 2-0 lead in the first on RBI singles from Wilson Contreras (.250) and Giuseppe Papaccio (.265). They wouldn’t score again. Carlos Escobar (.244) was 3-4 with a double (12) and Reggie Golden (.227) was 2-4.
On the Mound: Starling Peralta’s first three games in the MWL were spotless working 13.2 frames without allowing a run. Since then, not so good, allowing 13 earned runs in 15 innings. Those woes continued Friday night as Cedar Rapids scored eight runs on eight hits and three walks off Peralta (2-3 6.06 ERA) in four innings. He allowed three homers, the same problem he had in High A Daytona to start the year surrendering six long balls in 14 IP.....Al Yevoli (0-0 3.15), signed this summer out of the Frontier League, pitched in his 11th game tossing a scoreless fifth despite two walks.....Matt Iannazzo (1-1 3.86) and Andrew McKirahan (2-0 2.79) both pitched a scoreless inning....The highlight of the night was Kane County coach Kenny Socorro, who was recently activated and added to the roster. The right-hander allowed a hit and a walk but kept the Kernals off the board to keep his ERA at 0.00. Socorro, 24, only played one game last year due to an injury and played 34 games in 2010 as an infielder at Mesa, Boise and Peoria He pitched in a game last season for Peoria working the 13th and 14th innings against Wisconsin, earning the win as he retired all six hitters.
Cougars Notes: Rock Shoulders was named to the Midwest League Post Season All-Star team as the league’s designated hitter.
Short-Season—Salem-Keizer 10, Boise 6
Boise (20-15) dropped out of first-place as Salem-Keizer (21-14) used a five-run third to beat the Hawks.
At the Plate: The Hawks tied the game at 3-3 in the first as Jacob Rogers (.283), Justin Marra (.231) and David Bote (.249) all plated runs. Jeffrey Baez (.167) delivered a two-run triple (his first hit in Boise) in the sixth and the Hawks needed a two-base error to score their final run in the ninth. Daniel Lockhart (.298) went 2-5 with a run while eight of the nine Hawk batters got hits. Kevin Encarnacion (.363) ran his hit streak to 11 games.
On the Mound: Duane Underwood (3-4 4.97) had another rough night surrendering eight runs (four earned) on six hits and three walks. The right-hander fanned four in three innings..... Jasvir Rakkar (4-1 3.58) put down five Volcanoes on strikes allowing a run on three hits in three innings...... Zack Godley (2-0 1.75) only surrendered a single in two innings of scoreless relief...Carlos Martinez (4-2 5.19) gave a up a run on two hits in the ninth.
