Cardinals prospect interview: Ian McKinney

McKinney: Impressive 0.89 GCL ERA

Our top starter on the Cardinals' US entry-level rookie league club discusses his first professional season.

18-year-old Ian McKinney was the fourth pitcher and third left-hander taken by the St. Louis Cardinals in the 2013 draft, but was arguably the most effective of any newly-drafted organization hurler this season.

At the Gulf Coast League Cardinals rookie-level club, McKinney joined more highly-touted hurlers Rob Kaminsky, Steven Farinaro and Mike Mayers, but earned his selection as The Cardinal Nation 2013 GCL Cards Starting Pitcher of the Year.

Despite having just one decision, an August 19 win, in 10 appearances including five starts the Orlando, Fla. native had a team-best 0.89 ERA over 30 1/3 innings. McKinney gave up a run in his first appearance, a one-inning relief outing on July 6, and two runs to the Marlins in a four-inning start on August 24. In the eight appearances covering 25 1/3 in between, McKinney was unscored upon.

During the recently-completed instructional league, McKinney spoke about his pre-draft preparation as well as his first few months as a professional.
