Thomas Belts 400th in 7-2 Win Over D-Rays

(SN Report #582) - Frank Thomas' turbulent, love-hate career with the White Sox took the back seat on Friday night when Thomas knocked out his 400th career homer, making him the 36th player in major league history to do so. The Sox, behind another strong outing from Esteban Loaiza, breezed to a 7-2 win.

Thomas' fifth-inning homer, a solo shot, was the last of the scoring for the Sox, coming right after Carlos Lee's two-run homer. Thomas went 1-3 in the game with a walk and now has 24 homers and 56 RBIs.

Despite Loaiza's control, throwing just 36 balls, he lasted only 6 1/3 innings while throwing a season-high 116 pitches. Reason for that was the eighth hits allowed and 26 foul balls. Loaiza gave up two runs, walked one and struck out two.

The White Sox, as they have done many times over this 50-run, eight-game winning streak, scored and did so early with a three-run first.

Roberto Alomar led-off with a single and advanced to second on an error by thirdbaseman Antonio Perez, off the bat of Lee. Thomas then flied out deep to the warning-track in left, bringing up Magglio Ordonez, who doubled, scoring two runs. Carl Everett drove in Ordonez with a single, putting the Sox ahead, 3-0.

The Sox went up 7-0 in the fifth on a Miguel Olivo RBI-single and homers by Lee and Thomas. Olivo went 1-3, but committed his sixth error, a throwing error.

Loaiza gave up his two runs on a homer by Toby Hall in the seventh, getting pulled for Kelly Wunsch. Wunsch threw a scoreless 2/3 of an inning, while Gary Glover threw two scoreless innings. Glover has not given up a run in his last 5 2/3 innings pitched.

The win was the Sox' eighth in a row and keeps them four games behind the first-place Kansas City Royals.

Game two of the series will be played on Saturday at 6:05 p.m. CT, with Mike Porzio going up against Rob Bell. The game will be televised on WGN.
