Bradford, A's Shut Down Sox

Catcher Adam Melhuse

Posted Aug 9, 2003

Chad Bradford picked up his 2nd win in relief this season of Oakland starter Ted Lilly, who lasted just 4 1/3 innings while giving up 7 hits en route to a no decision. The loss snapped a 3-game winning by the Sox, moving them one game back in the AL Central race.

Ramon Hernandez drove in 5 runs, including 3 on homeruns to lift the A's to their 68th ML victory this season.

Sox starter Jon Garland was tagged for 6 runs in 5 innings of work while allowing 9 hits. He struck out 3 and walked 1 batter.

The Sox were doomed from the start after Oakland put a '3' spot on the board in the first inning alone. Garland allowed an RBI single to shortstop Miguel Tejada and later an RBI double to Hernandez.

The A's would go on to score in each of their first 3 innings at the plate. Newly acquired Oakland outfielder Jose Guillen singled in a run in the top of the 2nd to make it a 4-0 Oakland lead.

The Sox only run support came in the 5th inning when Joe Crede's double scored Paul Konerko. Crede later scored on a single by catcher Jamie Burke.
