Inside Cardinal Baseball: Weekly notebook

The University of Louisville baseball team will host an NCAA Regional this weekend at Jim Patterson Stadium. The Cardinals are one of just 16 teams across the country hosting a regional. Here are a few notes from the Cardinals' program.

THOMPSON NAMED GOLDEN SPIKES SEMIFINALIST

University of Louisville junior pitcher Jeff Thompson was selected on Tuesday as one of 30 players from all over the country as semifinalists for the prestigious USA Baseball Golden Spikes Award.

The Golden Spikes Award is presented annually to the top amateur baseball player in the country. The award will be given on July 19. The list of semifinalists will be narrowed to three finalists on June 4.

Thompson is a junior from Floyd Central, Ind., High School who was named Big East Conference Pitcher of the Year. He has a 10-1 record this season for the Cardinals with a 2.09 ERA and 97 strikeouts in 90.1 innings.

On the season, Thompson is holding opposing batters to a .174 batting average. He's 21-6 overall during his career and is expected to be a high draft pick in next week's MLB Amateur Draft.
