Updates on the major news across Major League Baseball during the 13th week of the season.…
Scout.com Player of the Week: Jason Kipnis
Kipnis nearly doubled Chris Davis's batting average over the past seven days, his on-base percentage was nearly .200 points higher than Rajai Davis's, he played in two more games and had 14 more plate appearances than Donaldson, while batting .478 to the Oakland Athletics' All-Star hopeful's .500. Kipnis swiped two bases, slugged three homers (to bring his season total to 12) and led the Major Leagues with 10 RBI, bringing him to 51 on the year.
All in all, not a bad week, especially when you throw in that Kipnis was fourth in the majors in slugging (1.043) and third in slugging (1.650), while walking eight times and striking out just thrice.
Kipnis led the American League in runs scored and hits, and tied eight others for the most doubles in the bigs with four two-baggers. No one in either league drew as many walks as the 5-foot-11, 185-pounder out of Arizona State.
From June 24-30, Kipnis and the Indians went 5-2, including a doubleheader sweep of AL Central rival Chicago in a pair of slugfests on June 28. During a day when the two teams combined to score 46 total runs, Kipnis went 4-for-7 with five runs scored, three doubles, four RBIs and four walks, not striking out once. In fact, Kipnis didn't strike out once during the entire three-game series with the White Sox, drawing five walks and driving in six – two RBIs in each game. Kipnis has gotten a hit in each of his last 12 games, and has hit safely in 22 of his last 23.
